Welcome High School Coaches

This website provides reference information and educational handouts for high school athletic coaches and their respective student-athletes.  The information provided is based on topics suggested by athletic coaches during focus group interviews with the following high schools: Northfield, Minneapolis Roosevelt and Minneapolis Edison.  The information is intended to serve as a general resource for existing and new coaches, student-athletes, and parent(s) who have an interest in sports nutrition.  Mark Johnson, RD, LD prepared the handouts.  He is a registered and licensed dietitian, and nutrition graduate student at the University of Minnesota.  The handouts were reviewed by Marla Reicks, PhD, RD, LN, Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Minnesota.

Physical exercise requires attention to food and fluid intake.  Athletes, especially adolescent-athletes, need more energy to not only fuel performance but to meet the demands for normal growth and development.  Regardless of the chosen sport, good nutrition is important for everyone.  The handouts include guidelines and/or suggestions that can be copied for educational purposes.

The main goal of the handouts is to increase awareness of the importance of sports nutrition.  The handouts provide coaches, athletes, and parents with information for eating before, during, and after competition.  The specific foods and fluids listed in the handouts are for example only and are not intended to be the only foods eaten.
